The purpose of the UFCW Minority Coalition Scholarship program is to provide financial assistance for post-secondary education to members of the UFCW Minority Coalition, UFCW Staff, and their spouse, or dependent child (as defined by IRS regulations). UFCW Minority Coalition Officers and Executive Board members are excluded from applying.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible to receive a scholarship, applicants must fall into one of the two categories:
Member Applicant
1.) A member of the UFCW in good standing or a UFCW staff employee as of the application date
2.) A member of the UFCW Minority Coalition in good standing for a period of at least one year (the one year membership minimum must be satisfied by April 30th of the scholarship year)
3.) Enrolled in an accredited licensed or professional institution qualified to offer instruction in the
academic areas pursued
Spouse or Dependent Child Applicant
1.) A spouse or dependent child of a member of the UFCW (or staff)/UFCW Minority Coalition in good
standing for a period of at least one year
2.) Enrolled in an accredited licensed or professional institution qualified to offer instruction in the academic areas pursued
Requirements for ALL Applicants
With your application you must have each of the following:
- Proof of registration/acceptance
- High School Transcript
- Copy of Marriage certificate (if spouse applicant) or copy of birth certificate/letter of guardianship (if dependent child applicant)
- Essay
(Essay must meet a 500 minimum word count and must not exceed 1500 words):
All applicants must submit an essay in response to one of the following essay prompts.
- Personal statement that demonstrates how the applicant has been impacted or influenced by the labor movement.
- Choose an accomplishment of Addie L. Wyatt and write about how the selected accomplishment changed the labor movement and provided equity for minority workers. Explain what the selected accomplishment means to you.
- Summarize the importance of “getting out the vote” (GOTV) events in the labor movement. Describe how voter restriction bills threaten to undermine democratic stability. Explain the contrasting correlation between high and low union density states
Procedures
All eligible applicants must submit a completed and signed application to the UFCW Minority Coalition by the June 19th deadline by uploading the application, including all required documents and essay to www.ufcwmc.org. Applications will be reviewed by the UFCW Minority Coalition Scholarship Committee. Scholarship recipient(s) will be determined by August 31st. Scholarship award recipients will be individually notified by e-mail. The overall list of award recipients will be posted on the UFCW Minority Coalition website. Due to the volume of applications, we cannot provide any information on the status of individual applications before award announcements are made.
