Purpose:
To provide scholarship assistance to UFCW
members or staff who are also members of the UFCW Minority Coalition.
Eligibility:
The applicant must be a member in good standing of the UFCW (or staff) and a member in good standing of the UFCW Minority Coalition for a period of at least one year, and
Enrolled in an accredited licensed or professional institution recognized as qualified to offer instruction in the academic areas pursued, or
A student in good standing in the college degree program or an applicant to the college degree program of the National Labor College.
Procedure:
The applicant must submit a completed scholarship application, a personal statement with a minimum of 750 words describing how they will benefit from their educational experience and official documentation confirming enrollment, course description and anticipated costs.
UFCW Minority Coalition Member Scholarship Program
Awards:
A total of $3,000 per year will be awarded to qualified individuals to take specific courses that may improve one’s ability to perform current job assignments or prepare an individual for future job advancement within the labor movement. The maximum amount awarded for individual classes will not exceed $750.
Evaluation Guidelines:
Entries will be reviewed by the Executive Board members of the UFCW Minority Coalition and one outside unaffiliated staff person of the UFCW.
For those attending the National Labor College, the application will be reviewed by a representative from the Labor College, and the UFCW Minority Coalition Scholarship Committee.
Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of need and the scholarship committee’s assessment of the applicant’s personal statement.
