On Friday, October 16, 2020, UFCW leaders and members along with their family and friends will come together to celebrate the 2020 UFCW Minority Coalition Annual Educational Conference and Recognition Awards. You are cordially invited to take part in this very special event. This year’s Conference will be held virtually via Zoom and promises to be as phenomenal as before, as we award outstanding persons for their exceptional service and raise funds to promote Sickle Cell disease education and research.
As always, our conference is the culmination of the Coalition’s week of education, inspiration, and planning. It starts with our Executive Board meeting, followed by a full day-long Education Conference, which will feature dynamic labor and community speakers from the AFL-CIO, UFCW, and other affiliates, as well as the NAACP and BLM activists.
The 2020 conference will take place amid an unprecedented, earthshaking moment in the history of our country. We are facing a trifecta of monumental events, which will change us and the trajectory of the country forever: a global pandemic which killed hundreds of thousands and created an economic recession that has devastated our communities and shattered the dreams and aspirations of working families, nationwide protests and demonstrations against police brutality and systemic racism directed at Blacks, the kind we have not seen since the Civil Right movement and last but not least, the most consequential election in our lifetime.
The Covid -19 pandemic and the uprisings and protests to defend Black lives have brought to light the inequalities and injustices that have, for too long existed in our society. They have clearly revealed the sad reality that Black and Brown people continue to be disproportionately victimized because of systemic racism that prevent them access to affordable healthcare, force them into ‘essential” jobs that cannot be performed at home, and make them more susceptible to get killed by unscrupulous police officers.
However this climate has also created an opportunity for Unions, which one may argue has always been the vanguard of social and economic justice in this country, to seize the moment and bring together all workers regardless of race and demonstrate the power of our slogan “An injury to one is an injury to all.”
Appropriately, the 2020 Minority Coalition conference theme is “Black Lives Matter Movement: Challenges & Opportunities for Unions.” A segment of the conference will also focus on the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election and will feature GOTV phone banking. Participants will be given the opportunity to participate in follow up workshops and will be encouraged to submit questions to panelists during the presentation. We are confident you will welcome and enjoy these critical conversations.
While our Annual Ball has become the premiere fundraising event for the Coalition’s charity, Faces of Our Children (501(c) non-profit organization), due to CDC restrictions, there will not be a fundraising Ball this year. As you know, over the years, with your help, we have increased public awareness, helped families of children with the disease, and supported efforts in finding a cure and we will not stop because of COVID-19. Our success is due in large part to our efforts to bring it to the forefront and your financial support. The Coalition extends its sincere gratitude to all of you and graciously asks for your ongoing help and financial assistance.
Enclosed, you will find details on how to join us virtually by registering via CVent, Conference tickets and sponsorship information, including a list of the 2020 UFCW Minority Coalition Award Recipients. Please note that the deadline for Registration and Sponsorship tickets is September 25th, 2020. Thank you again for your continuing support, and make sure you do not miss this incredible event.
